The Laboratory Operations Coordinator will supervise and coordinate activities in chemistry teaching laboratories; prepare and maintain laboratories for instructional use; organize and maintain stockrooms, storage areas, and hazardous waste areas; audit teaching and research laboratories for safety and hazardous material regulations compliance.

Participate in establishing and implementing policies and procedures for proper laboratory management; supervising laboratory staff.
Purchase and prepare necessary laboratory materials.
Manage student assistants involved in stock room operations and teaching laboratory classes, including safety, training, and scheduling work hours.
Maintain departmental records and files concerning purchasing chemicals and safety regulations.
The position will include limited teaching at the introductory level of laboratory classes.
Supervision: This position reports to the Chair of the Department of Chemistry.
The position supervises the laboratory staff of student assistants assigned to the Chemistry department stock room.
Job Responsibilities: Coordinate distribution of laboratory materials for classroom and laboratory projects; obtain estimates and coordinate purchase of laboratory equipment, apparatus, reagents, and other supplies for laboratory instruction.
Maintain stocks of chemicals, glassware, and equipment as needed.
Maintain inventory, records, and procedures for chemical storage in accordance with College, state and federal requirements; ensure student training in: the proper handling of chemical reagents, general skills for teaching assistants in the laboratory classes, and proper storage and disposal of hazardous wastes.
Be present and available during normal business hours to address and resolve potential issues with chemical and laboratory safety and to support and ensure normal laboratory operations.
Work with College Safety Officer to ensure safe storage and use of chemical reagents, and compliance with all relevant regulations regarding the safe storage and disposal of hazardous wastes; receive any instruction or training on hazardous materials disposal and regulations as deemed necessary by the College Safety Officer; facilitate access of materials safety data sheets for all chemicals used in classrooms or laboratories by all faculty, personnel, and students; collect and properly dispose of all chemical and medical hazardous wastes.
Coordinate, monitor, and supervise the work of student personnel assigned to stock room operations; maintain time records for student employment documentation; assist faculty in the training and instruction of student assistants in laboratory classes; direct student maintenance and storage of laboratory glassware and equipment.
The Laboratory coordinator will teach a limited number of introductory level laboratory classes according to the departmental needs and on the condition that above main responsibilities of the position are fulfilled.
Qualifications: Masters’s degree in chemistry or closely related field with a minimum of 3 years related experience or Bachelors with significant proven track record of relevant work in comparable academic environment, involving managing chemical materials and mentoring responsibilities.
Excellent knowledge of experimental procedures and equipment use, in addition to safety regulations pertaining to the proper handling and disposal of residual chemical waste.
Excellent organizational, analytical, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, demonstrated supervisory experience, working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and database software applications and on-line information systems.
Demonstrated interest in pedagogical aspects of the undergraduate laboratory courses.
Work Environment: Most of the work of the incumbent is carried out within an accessible, safe, indoor environment.
The incumbent will be required to operate a personal computer and associated office equipment.
The incumbent will be required to ensure proper handling of chemicals and other supplies and materials used in laboratory research and teaching.
The incumbent will be handling chemicals and chemical waste in properly ventilated areas and will be required to operate various laboratory equipment.
